Supplemental Year

On March 24th, Governor Andy Beshear signed into law Senate Bill 128, which creates the Supplemental School Year Program. This legislation allows any K-12 student enrolled in the 2020-2021 school year to use the 21-22 school year as a supplemental year to supplement courses that the student has already taken. The Simpson Co. School district will have to approve either all requests or none at all. Individual requests to approve the supplemental school year is not an option. SCS would like to share some important information that will allow families to make the decision for their student.

Timelines for SB 128
Students have until May 1st to request the supplemental school year.
SCS will have until June 1st to make a decision to implement SB 128.

The supplemental school year program was established for students to retake or supplement courses the student has already taken.

Students who request the supplemental year will be required to to take all state assessments for that grade level.

Any course retaken at the high school level shall not count as an additional credit toward graduation unless the student failed the course.

Students in the Class of 2021 will graduate as long as they have met all the requirements for graduation. They will no longer be considered high school students for the purpose of dual credit scholarships and are not eligible for dual credit or work ready scholarships for the 2021-2022 school year. Any classes taken at SKYCTC or another college/university will be charged at the full tuition rate for that institution.

Students can participate in extracurricular activities and athletics as long as they meet the KHSAA age and eligibility requirements.  https://bit.ly/3dUJ9us

There will not be a virtual option for any supplemental school year students. All supplemental school year students will be required to attend in person.

K-8 students will be repeating the current grade they are currently enrolled in.

Any student in the Class of 2021 that has graduated from high school it is recommended that parents/students read the guidance provided by KHEAA https://www.kheaa.com/website/kheaa/home and KHSAA https://khsaa.org/.

In order for SCS to plan for implementation of SB 128 we need to know how many students are wanting to participate in the supplemental school year. Please complete the form below by May 1st, 2021 only if you are requesting the supplemental school year. bit.ly/fssupyear
