On particularly cold mornings, we continuously monitor the National Weather Service and closely monitor the weather conditions. There are two possible scenarios that come from the National Weather Service: a Wind Chill Advisory and a Wind Chill Warning. The National Weather Service defines the two as the following:

The Southcentral Kentucky Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (SKY FAME) is a partnership of regional manufacturers whose purpose is to implement a work-and-learn style program that will create a pipeline of highly skilled workers. The primary method to achieve this goal is through partnerships with local educational institutions to offer the Advanced Manufacturing Technician Program (AMT). With SKY FAME, students can dive into a challenging Advanced Manufacturing career while simultaneously earning a college degree, and the potential to graduate with zero student debt!

Email Migration

The purpose of this communication is to let you know that all districts throughout our state are changing email systems this year.  All 173 school districts have been under one major email umbrella provided by Microsoft (Office 365).  Moving forward, there will now be 173 email umbrellas with districts having much more local control.  This is good news!

New Immunization Requirements

A recent amendment to the Kentucky Administrative Regulation on the immunization schedules for attending school added new immunization requirements for the school year beginning on or after July 1, 2018.

2018 Operation Preparation

The Vision of Simpson County Schools is to prepare our graduates for success in life!  An important part of our Life-Ready Vision is our students being prepared for college and careers upon graduation. To impact the college/career readiness of our students, we need your help in our Operation Preparation initiative.  Operation Preparation was started six years ago to bring community volunteers into our schools to encourage and advise 8th and 10th grade students on college and careers.  Kentucky’s current statewide college/career readiness rate is 65.6 percent. Last year, FSHS achieved a college/career readiness (CCR) rate of 85.9 percent, even with changes that set the bar even higher!  Our ultimate goal is to graduate 100 percent of our students meeting the college/career ready benchmarks.  According to the Center for Education and the Workforce, in the next 4-6 years, more than half the jobs in Kentucky and more than 60 percent of jobs nationwide will require postsecondary education (either a two-year or four-year degree). Most of the remaining jobs will require at least some training after high school. With a statewide student-to-counselor ratio of about 450:1, many school counselors are overloaded with the number of students to whom they must provide services.

2018-2019 District Calendar Feedback

It is time to get your feedback on our 2018-2019 School Calendar!  State statute now requires we utilize a calendar committee with specified membership including certified and classified staff, along with a board member, parents, and community members.  Our calendar committee has met and looked at a calendar with corresponding dates to this year and past years.  Ultimately, the Simpson County Board of Education is responsible for setting the school calendar and we want your input.  The link below will allow you to access a short survey on the calendar.  Additionally, I have attached a draft calendar for your review.

Great news for Simpson County students! At the May Board meeting, Simpson County Schools was approved to participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program which will provide free breakfast and lunch to all SCS students! CEP is a universal meal service option created through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act that became available to all States a few years ago.

We will continue to offer the good quality meals we are serving today. Students will still need to get all the required components of the meal at breakfast (Entrée, Fruit/Juice & Milk) and at Lunch (Entrée, Fruit/Juice, Vegetable & Milk) to qualify for this program. Ala Carte items or “extras” will continued to be items that must be purchased. In order to make CEP a huge success, we will need the support from all staff members encouraging all of our students to eat breakfast and lunch with us every day!

At the end of the school year, we will evaluate the CEP program to ensure that we can continue offer it. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct those to Food Service Director Sarah Richardson – sarah.richardson@simpson.kyschools.us

High Attendance Day in Simpson County scheduled for Thursday, September 24

Thursday, September 24 is designated as High Attendance Day for schools across the state of Kentucky. High Attendance Day emphasizes the importance of being an active participant in the educational process.

Regular attendance is essential for success in school. By attending class regularly, a student is more likely to keep up with the daily lessons and assignments, and achieve academic performance benchmarks on time. Research reflects that a child’s attendance record is one of the strongest single predictors of their academic success.

In addition to academic success good attendance helps students develop the self-discipline, work ethic, and responsibility required to be college and career ready.

Please take time this week to talk to your children about the importance of good attendance.

Bella's Books taking book donations for Monroe Carrel Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt

Hi, my name is Bella Robertson.  I want to share a project I'm working on called Bella’s Books.  It all started a little over a year ago.  I saw a commercial about children in the hospital.  It made me feel kind of sad.

Later that day, as I was in my room I started thinking about how I love to read and how lucky I am to have a whole bookshelf full of books to choose from.  A good book can take you anywhere.  Once I start reading a good story, I don’t want to take my eyes off until the end!  I want the children in the hospital to have that same experience! They have to be there to get better, so why not enjoy the time.

That’s when my dream, Bella’s Books came to mind.  I can’t provide books for all the children I want to help by myself, but together we can.  I am asking each of you to bring in a new book to donate to Monroe Carrel Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
